Thank you so much for being a part of my Substack community! I appreciate you taking the time to read my thoughts and I absolutely love it when you respond with some of your own thoughts!

I want to take this opportunity to spell out my mission. This helps me, but I also hope it helps you to clarify your own mission. We are all capable of living on purpose, with intentionality and direction. Mission could also be called purpose, calling, or vision. Clarifying my mission sets a target on the wall that I can aim my arrows at—my personal and professional life arrows, the things I do and how I interact with the world.

My Mission in 3 Parts

My mission to is promote God’s unconditional love so you’ll know you are loved unconditionally, equipping you to love others unconditionally.

I landed on this mission because I believe we will literally change the world for the better as we become better at knowing love and sharing it wherever we are.

  • To Promote God’s Unconditional Love

There are so many differing messages swirling around about how God looks at you. Some say God’s angry and always waiting to knock your block off if you do something wrong. Many say God will send you to an eternity of burning hell if you don’t do/believe certain things. My vision of God’s love comes from the life of Jesus—who showed us how to live and how to die. Jesus healed the sick, he fed the hungry, he questioned authority and the spiritually arrogant, he showed value to the outsider, and said outright, “There’s no greater love than to lay down your life for another.” Jesus showed us that God is willing to do anything to let us know we’re loved, and how good or bad we are has absolutely nothing to do with it. Just look at Jesus.

  • So You’ll Know You Are Loved Unconditionally

I’m choosing to believe that I am loved unconditionally. You can also believe that if you want to. I know what it’s like to live with fear and shame as the primary responses to what I thought was God’s eye on me. I thought God was just waiting around for me to get my act together, to get all cleaned up, and then I’d be free of the shame and fear I was carrying simply because I was a human. I had to believe in an all-encompassing love before I could accept any of it. I could understand how God loved the really good parts of me. But now I believe God loves all of me—all the parts that are good…and all the not yet redeemed parts. When I see myself as loved, I am free to be the most authentic and excellent version of Mark Smeby. I don’t have to perform for God anymore. God’s unconditional love says, “There’s nothing you can do to ever separate yourself from my love.”

  • So You’ll Be Equipped To Love Others Unconditionally

A life that’s focused on loving other people with God’s unconditional love is so magnificent…I can’t believe I waited so long to do it! Actually I do…cause I was taught that I need to fix people, tell people what was wrong with them, and get them to believe the right beliefs (my beliefs). I was a Class A control freak, and it only pushed people away from me. When I love people as they are…without having any kind of hidden agenda…I can see God in them! I can see how God has made magnificent, beautiful humans all over the place. Treating people this way frees them to be the most authentic and excellent versions of themselves.

I hope you’ve seen these elements play out in each of my weekly writings, as well as in my music, my social media feeds, and even in my photography. It’s my goal to help equip all of us to be better lovers of God, ourselves, and other people.

And I’d love hear from you! I’m super interested to hear how you do this in your own life? How do you understand God’s unconditional love and how do you share with it others?
